Sulfamic acid

Sulfamic acid (aminosulfonic acid, amidosulfuric acid, sulfuric acid monoamide) is designated by the chemical formula NH2SO2OH and is an organic compound of colorless crystals that are diamond-shaped.

This product is highly soluble in water and reacts poorly to organic solvents; it is insoluble in concentrated sulfuric acid. Sulfamic acid reacts well with phenols, primary and secondary alcohols.

In industry, amido-sulfuric acid is produced by the interaction of urea with sulfur oxide and sulfuric acid. The melting point of the product is 205 ° C. When heated to 260 ° C, sulfamic acid decomposes into sulfur oxide (SO2, SO3), nitrogen and water.

At room temperature, the product practically does not undergo hydrolysis. However, at elevated temperatures, sulfamic acid is hydrolyzed to ammonium hydrogen sulfate. The rate of hydrolysis in an acidic environment is significantly increased.

To identify sulfamic acid, reaction with nitrous acid or fusion with benzoin is used.
